В связи с переориентацией Московского княжества с Золотой Орды на Византию происходит и переосмысление значения шапки в русле концепции «Москва — Третий Рим». В «Сказании о князьях Владимирских» (около 1518 года) формулируется официальная версия её происхождения: этот дар византийского императора Константина IX Мономаха своему внуку, киевскому князю Владимиру Всеволодовичу Мономаху, должен был символизировать преемственность власти русских правителей от византийских императоров.
